Village Gallery Features Greg Griffin
Photographer Greg Griffin will be the Featured Artist at the Village Gallery of Local Artists for the month of January 2025. A reception will be held on Friday, January 3rd, from 5 to 8 p.m. to showcase his work. Griffin will be present to discuss his work and explain his process.
In his display in the “Vortex Room” at the Village Gallery, Griffin exhibits a dynamic array of subjects, compositions, and colors. A hummingbird mid-flight. The cool interior hues of a vintage barn. Aspens against the backdrop of a clear blue sky. And, of course, Sedona’s majestic red rocks. “I always photograph whatever moves me,” he explains. “I have my camera with me almost all the time. Sometimes I plan ahead for what I want to shoot; other times, I just happen to see something that catches my attention.”
To capture his subjects, Griffin utilizes unique angles, varied lighting, and unusual backgrounds. “I especially love what a dramatic sky can add to a photograph.” And he particularly loves taking pictures of hummingbirds and wildlife, as well as street photography showcasing people.
Although Griffin started taking pictures during high school, he found that he did not have a lot of time to devote to photography during his professional career. He spent nine years in the United States Air Force, two years in the Air National Guard, and nearly 30 years as a professional firefighter. Once he retired and moved to Sedona in 2012, he was able to make photography more than a hobby.
Today, he constantly challenges himself to produce unique images by learning new skills and techniques, whether with his camera or in the post-processing of his images. Griffin’s work outdoors can be especially physical. “A few of the landscape photos I’ve taken have involved challenges, such as hiking, rough four-wheel driving, or dealing with extreme weather,” he recalls. “And photography requires a lot of patience. Have you ever tried to photograph hummingbirds that move a mile a minute?”
The work pays off in the relationships Griffin cultivates with longtime collectors of his photographs. “Over the years, I’ve had a number of people purchase additional photos from me. One woman in the Prescott area has decorated her home with many of my images in different formats. I consider return customers the ultimate compliment.”
The public is invited to meet Greg Griffin, view his work, and discuss his process from 5-8pm on Friday, January 3rd. Refreshments will be served. The Village Gallery is located at 6512 State Route 179, in the Village of Oak Creek, and is always accepting applications for unique art and new membership in our cooperative style gallery.
